A thermal power station is a large facility designed to convert heat energy into electrical energy.

These stations are essential to the global energy landscape. They currently produce 70% of the world's electricity. Because they provide a stable and continuous baseload power supply, they are vital for economic growth. They also ensure energy security by maintaining grid stability. This is especially important in regions that rely on intermittent renewable energy sources.

The process of generating power relies on a thermodynamic power cycle. This is a series of steps that converts heat into mechanical energy. In the most common method, a working fluid like water is used. The water is heated and boiled under high pressure within a pressure vessel. This creates high-pressure steam. This steam is then directed toward a turbine. The force of the steam causes the turbine's blades to rotate. This rotating turbine is mechanically connected to an electric generator. The generator then converts that rotary motion into electricity.

Different types of thermal power stations use different thermodynamic cycles. The Rankine cycle is a very common method used in steam-driven plants. In this cycle, low-pressure exhaust from the turbine enters a steam condenser. The condenser cools the steam to produce hot condensate. This liquid is then recycled back into the heating process to create more high-pressure steam.

Other plants might use a Diesel cycle or a Brayton cycle. Some plants use internal combustion. In these cases, fuels like natural gas or oil are burned directly in gas turbines. This allows the plant to skip the steam generation step entirely.

Efficiency is a key measure for these facilities. Efficiency is the ratio of saleable electricity to the heating value of the fuel used. Different cycles offer different levels of efficiency. For example, a simple cycle gas turbine typically achieves efficiencies between 20% and 35%. Typical coal-based plants operating at high pressures and temperatures run at 35% to 38% efficiency. State-of-the-art fossil fuel plants can reach 46% efficiency. Combined-cycle systems can reach even higher values. These systems use a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) to capture waste heat from a gas turbine. This heat is used to raise steam for a second turbine, which improves total efficiency.

Thermal power stations can use many different energy sources. Fossil fuel power stations burn coal, fuel oil, or natural gas. Some stations use biomass, which is organic material. Other stations use nuclear fuel, geothermal energy, or solar thermal energy.

Geothermal plants are unique because they use naturally occurring steam sources instead of boilers. Some plants are also designed for cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP). These facilities produce both electricity and useful heat for industrial processes or district heating. This simultaneous production significantly improves overall efficiency by utilizing waste heat.

The history of thermal power shows a major shift in technology. In the 18th century, people used reciprocating steam engines to produce mechanical power. James Watt made notable improvements to these engines. The first commercial central electrical power stations opened in 1882. These were the Pearl Street Station in New York and the Holborn Viaduct station in London.

In 1884, the steam turbine was developed. By 1892, turbines were seen as a better alternative to reciprocating engines. They were more compact and offered higher speeds. By 1905, turbines had almost entirely replaced reciprocating engines in large central power stations.

While thermal power is vital, it also presents environmental challenges. Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. It also releases air pollutants like sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. These pollutants can lead to acid rain and respiratory diseases. To help, scientists are developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. This technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it is currently expensive and rarely implemented. Many older, less efficient stations are now being decommissioned. They are being replaced by cleaner energy sources or adapted to use renewable fuels.
