Electricity generation

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Electricity is something we use every single day. However, we cannot find it just lying around in nature.

We must produce it in special buildings called power plants. This happens by changing one kind of energy into electricity. Most power plants use machines called generators to do this work. These machines turn motion into the power we use at home.

This process is a very important part of our modern world.

Most electricity is made using a tool called a turbine. A turbine is a machine with blades that spins around.

This spinning motion drives a generator through electromagnetic induction. This is a way to make power by moving a magnet near loops of wire. Many different things can make a turbine spin. Wind can turn large fans in a field. Falling water can spin wheels inside big dams.

Burning coal or gas can also create steam to spin the blades.

People have been learning how to make electricity for a long time. A British scientist named Michael Faraday discovered the main rules in the 1820s. He found that moving a wire near a magnet creates power. Later, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla helped make electricity a part of daily life. In 1882, the first central power station opened on Pearl Street in New York. It used a steam engine to power lights for the public.

This changed how cities looked and worked forever.

Today, we use many different sources to create our power. About 41% of all electricity comes from burning coal to make steam. Natural gas is also very common and makes at least 20% of the world's power. We also use water, which provides about 16% of our electricity. Huge structures like the Three Gorges Dam in China can produce 22.5 GW of power.

Some places use solar panels to turn sunlight directly into electricity.

Learning about electricity helps us understand how our world stays running. Just like a battery stores energy for a small toy, power plants provide energy for whole cities. We are now learning to use more wind and solar power. This helps us limit climate change by using cleaner energy sources. As we use more electric cars and tools, our need for power grows.
