We use electricity every day. But we cannot find it just lying around in nature.

We must make it in power plants.

Most electricity comes from a tool called a generator. A generator turns motion into power. This works through electromagnetic induction.

This is a way to make power by moving a magnet near wires. To make the generator spin, we use a turbine. A turbine is a machine with blades that rotates.

Many things can spin a turbine. Wind can turn large fans. Falling water can spin wheels in big dams.

Burning coal or gas can make steam. This steam spins a turbine to make power. Most of the world's power comes from using steam.

Some ways do not use spinning parts. Solar panels use the photovoltaic effect. This is a way to turn sunlight into power. Batteries also make power through chemical changes. In 1882, the first power station used a steam engine to make light. Today, we use many sources like wind, sun, and water to help our planet.
