A generator is a tool that makes electricity.

It works by changing motion into electrical power. To start, something must spin the machine. This can be wind, water, or steam. Some machines even use a hand crank to spin.

Inside, the generator has two main parts. One part spins, called the rotor. The other part stays still, called the stator.

One part creates a magnetic field. The other part has wires called the armature. When the rotor spins, the magnetic field moves near the wires. This movement makes electricity flow through the armature.

There are two main types of these machines. Dynamos make direct current, or DC. This is a steady flow of power. Alternators make alternating current, or AC. In AC, the power changes direction.

Most power in our world uses AC. It is easy to send over long distances. Michael Faraday invented the first electromagnetic generator in 1831. He used a spinning copper disk to make power.
