Electric generator

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An electric generator is a very important machine. It turns mechanical energy into electrical energy. This energy can then flow through a circuit to power things. Most generators are rotating machines. They use a source of kinetic power to spin a shaft. This spinning shaft makes an electric current. This current flows out to power many different electrical loads. Generators produce nearly all the electricity for power grids around the world.

How does a generator work? It uses a magnetic circuit with two main parts. The first part is called a rotor. The rotor is the part that spins. The second part is called a stator. The stator is the stationary part that surrounds the rotor. One of these parts creates a magnetic field. This field can come from permanent magnets or field coils. The other part has wire windings called an armature. When the magnetic field moves near these wires, it induces an electric current. This current provides the power for our devices.

People have been studying these machines for a long time. The first electromagnetic generator was the Faraday disk. A British scientist named Michael Faraday invented it in 1831. He discovered how magnetism and electricity work together. Another scientist named Ányos Jedlik was also experimenting with these devices in 1827. He worked on electromagnetic rotating devices. Later, inventors like Hippolyte Pixii built the first practical dynamo in 1832. This machine could provide power for industry.

There are two main types of electromagnetic generators. These are called dynamos and alternators. Dynamos create direct current, which is also called DC. They use a part called a commutator to make this happen. Alternators create alternating current, or AC. Most modern power systems use AC. This is because AC is easy to change to high voltages. This makes it easy to send electricity over very long distances.

You can see the results of generators every day. Many different things can spin a generator's shaft. Some use steam turbines or gas turbines. Others use water turbines or wind turbines. Even a hand crank can work to spin a small generator. Some motors can even work backward to act as generators. If you spin the shaft of a motor, it creates power. This shows how closely related motors and generators really are.
