A power station is a large place that makes electricity.

Most stations connect to an electrical grid. This is a network that carries power to homes. Many stations use a generator to make electricity. A generator is a machine that turns motion into power. It works by moving a magnetic field near a conductor. This movement creates an electric current.

There are many ways to make this motion. Some plants burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, or gas. These are called thermal power stations. They use heat to make steam. The steam turns a turbine, which is a machine with blades.

Other plants use different sources. Nuclear power plants use heat from a nuclear reactor. Geothermal plants use steam from hot rocks underground.

Some plants use wind or sun to make power. Hydroelectric plants use moving water to spin the generators.

Some plants run all the time to provide base load power. Other plants only run during busy times to provide peak power.
