An electrical grid is a large web of wires.

This web moves power from makers to users. It starts at power stations. These stations make power from wind, water, or sun.

Many stations are far from big cities.

First, power moves through transmission lines.

These lines carry power over long distances. To do this well, the grid uses substations. A substation is a place that changes the voltage. Voltage is the push that moves electricity.

At a step-up substation, the voltage goes up. High voltage helps power travel far with less loss. Then, it reaches a step-down substation. This lowers the voltage to make it safe. Finally, distribution lines carry power to your home.

Grids can be many sizes. A microgrid is a small, local grid. It can work on its own if the main grid fails. Some grids are huge. They can cover whole countries or even continents. These large grids help share power between many places.
