Fossil fuels are materials found deep in the Earth. They come from dead plants and tiny animals. These living things died millions of years ago. They were buried under layers of mud and sand.

Over a long time, heat and pressure changed them. This changed them into coal, oil, or natural gas. We call these fossil fuels. They are non-renewable. This means they take too long to make more. We use them up faster than nature can replace them.

We burn these fuels to get power. This power runs engines in cars and trucks. It also makes electricity for our homes. We even use them to make plastic.

But burning them can hurt our world. It lets out gases like carbon dioxide. These gases cause global warming. This makes the Earth too warm. Burning coal can also make acid rain. This can damage statues and trees. Many people are now looking for cleaner ways to get power.
