Fossil fuel

earth science Maturity 11-13 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Fossil fuels are special materials found deep inside the Earth's crust. They are made from the remains of prehistoric living things. These include ancient plants, animals, and tiny organisms called microplanktons.

Because these fuels take millions of years to form, we call them non-renewable resources. This means we use them up much faster than nature can replace them. They are very important because they provide a huge amount of energy for our world.

The way these fuels form is a very slow process. It begins when dead organisms sink to the bottom of water. They are buried under heavy layers of mud and sediment. Over millions of years, the intense heat and pressure from the Earth change them.

Tiny sea creatures can turn into petroleum or natural gas. Land plants usually turn into coal or methane. Sometimes, the heat turns organic matter into a waxy substance called kerogen. This is how the Earth creates different types of fuel.

People have studied how these fuels work for a long time. In 1597, a man named Andreas Libavius wrote about them. Later, Mikhail Lomonosov shared ideas about them in the 1700s. The term "fossil fuel" was first used by a German chemist named Caspar Neumann in 1759.

In the past, people used wood or peat for heat. Then, the Industrial Revolution began using coal to power steam engines. Later, the internal combustion engine made gasoline and diesel very important.

Today, fossil fuels play a massive role in our daily lives. In 2023, they provided 77% of the world's primary energy. They also provided over 60% of the world's electricity.

We use them to cook food, heat homes, and light up cities. They even help grow our food through fertilizers made from natural gas. Some fuels are refined into gasoline for cars or diesel for trucks. We even use them to make things like plastics.

While they are useful, burning fossil fuels can cause problems for our planet. Burning them releases gases like carbon dioxide into the air. These gases are part of the greenhouse effect that causes global warming.

This can lead to ocean acidification and changes in the weather. Burning coal can also create acid rain that harms trees and stone statues. Because of these effects, many people are working to find cleaner, renewable energy instead.
