Methane is a gas that lives in our atmosphere. It is a greenhouse gas, which means it helps trap heat around the Earth. This gas is very strong at warming the planet. In fact, it is responsible for about one-third of near-term global heating.

Methane is even more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat. Over a 20-year period, one ton of methane warms the air 85 times more than one ton of carbon dioxide. This is called its global warming potential. Even though it is powerful, methane does not stay in the air forever. Less than half of it remains after ten years.

Much of this gas is made through a process called methanogenesis. This is the way tiny living things called archaea make methane. These microscopic organisms live in places without much oxygen. They use a way of breaking down food called fermentation to get energy.

They can break down something called acetate to create methane and carbon dioxide. Other archaea use hydrogen and carbon dioxide to make methane and water. In wet places like wetlands, plants help this gas travel. The plants act like inverted lightning rods. They direct the gas up through the soil and into the air.

Humans have changed how much methane is in the air. Since the Industrial Revolution, methane levels have more than doubled. In 2019, methane levels reached 1860 parts per billion. This is two and a half times higher than levels before industry began.

Most of this increase comes from human activities. About 60% of methane released in 2019 came from people. This equals about 360 million tons of gas. The other 40% came from natural sources like wetlands. Natural sources like wetlands contribute about 230 million tons.

There are many different ways humans release this gas. One big source is animal agriculture. This includes animals like cattle and sheep. These animals use a process called enteric fermentation to digest food. A single cow can produce up to 99 kg of methane every year.

Fossil fuels are another major source. Methane leaks from oil wells, gas distribution, and coal mines. Russia is the top emitter of methane from oil and gas. Another source is human waste. This gas comes from landfills and wastewater treatment. Rice production is also a large part of agricultural emissions.

Understanding methane helps us see how the Earth works. We can compare its effects to other gases to see its impact. Even though it disappears faster than carbon dioxide, it is very important. Reducing methane can buy us more time. It gives us more time to work on harder jobs like reducing carbon emissions.

Scientists track these changes using satellites and special tools. They look at how the gas moves through the air. This helps us understand how to protect our environment for the future.
