Sustainable energy is a way to power our world without hurting the future.

It means meeting our needs today without taking away from future generations. To be truly sustainable, energy must help the environment, the economy, and society. This includes looking at air pollution and how much money things cost. It also means making sure everyone has access to power. Scientists and leaders look at many different parts to define this goal.

How we get energy changes how the planet works. Most of our energy currently comes from burning fossil fuels.

This process releases greenhouse gases into the air. These gases are responsible for 76% of human-caused emissions. Using these fuels can also cause acid rain and water scarcity. Renewable energy, like wind or solar, is often much cleaner.

However, the sun does not always shine and wind does not always blow. This means we may need new ways to store power, such as using hydrogen fuel.

People have been working on these ideas for a long time. In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission wrote a report called "Our Common Future."

This report helped define what sustainable development really means. Since the early 1990s, the idea of sustainable energy has grown much larger. It used to focus mostly on emissions and energy security. Now, it includes social issues like workers' rights and land rights. Leaders now use these ideas to plan for a cleaner world.

There are many important facts to know about our current energy use. As of 2019, fossil fuels provided 85% of the world's energy.

About 790 million people in developing countries still lack electricity. Many others, around 2.6 billion people, must use wood or charcoal to cook. This type of cooking causes about 7 million deaths every year. To stop global warming, we must reach net-zero emissions by mid-century.

The International Energy Agency says we must change how we produce and use power.

We can link these big ideas to things we do every day. For example, energy efficiency is like using a better tool to do a job.

You can also use appliances that do not waste power. Using less energy helps keep the air clean for everyone. Governments can help by building better paths for electric transport. Every small change helps us reach a more sustainable future for all.
