Energy engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Energy engineering is a very important field of science. It helps us find the best ways to make and use power. People around the world always need more energy every day. Engineers work to meet this need in a sustainable way. This means they want to protect our planet for the future.

They study many different areas to do this job well. They look at how to harvest energy from nature. They also study how to store that energy for later use.

These engineers follow a specific way of working. They use math, physics, and chemistry to solve hard problems. First, they audit how much energy a building or factory uses. They look for ways to stop energy from being wasted. They might suggest better insulation to keep heat inside a house. They may also suggest better lighting or more efficient cooling systems.

This process helps make everything run much more smoothly.

Humans have always looked for ways to use energy. Long ago, people used fire and water wheels for work. Later, they built windmills and made electricity. Energy engineering became a formal field during the Industrial Revolution. It grew even more in the middle of the 20th century. The oil crisis in 1973 showed why we need efficiency. In 1979, another energy crisis helped people see the need for better systems.

There are many interesting facts about this field. In the United States, buildings use over 40% of all energy. In 2010, the U.S. produced 250 million tons of municipal waste. About 13% of that waste goes to energy recovery plants.

Some countries are very good at this, like Denmark. In 2010, Denmark sent 24% of its waste to energy facilities. Germany also has a plan called "Energiewende" to use renewable energy.

Energy engineering connects to many things you see every day. You might see solar panels on a roof. You might see large wind turbines in a field.
