Environmental engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Environmental engineering is a special way of using science to help our world. These engineers use many subjects like biology, chemistry, and math to solve problems. They want to protect the health of all living things and improve our environment. This work is part of civil engineering and chemical engineering.

Engineers find ways to manage waste and control pollution in our air and water. They also design systems to recycle things and keep our cities clean. By doing this, they help make life better for everyone on Earth.

There are many steps in how these engineers solve a problem. For example, they look at how water moves through a large area called a watershed. They figure out how much water is available and how much people need. To clean dirty water, they use a process called a treatment train. First, a system removes solid pieces that float or sink. Next, an aeration basin uses bacteria to eat organic material. Finally, they might use a process to remove nitrogen or disinfect the water.

People have been doing this kind of work since ancient times. The Indus Valley Civilization lived between 3300 B.C.E. and 1300 B.C.E. They built wells, public baths, and even a city-wide sewage system. In Rome, engineers built aqueducts to bring safe water to the city. They even had underground sewers as early as the 7th century B.C.E. These systems helped people stay healthy and grow food in dry places.

Modern work changed a lot in the mid-19th century in London. A man named Joseph Bazalgette designed a huge sewer system there. This was important because the city had a bad problem called the Great Stink. Before this, sewage went into the River Thames, which was also where people got drinking water. This caused a disease called cholera to spread. Later, in 1962, a book called Silent Spring by Rachel Carson helped start the modern environmental movement. This led to environmental engineering becoming its own special field of study.

Today, these engineers face very big challenges for our future. They work to stop global warming and help us live without much pollution. They also look for ways to supply food, water, and energy in a way that lasts. You might see their work when you turn on a faucet to get clean water. Or you might see it in how your city handles trash and recycling. Their goal is to protect both people and the whole planet.
