Engineers study how to change raw materials into products. They use the laws of nature to do this work. They use things like heat and pressure to make changes. They also use concentration gradients to move materials. This field helps turn energy and matter into things we need. It makes sure products are made in a very smart way.

There are many steps in how a process works. First, engineers look at the chemical makeup of ingredients. They decide how those ingredients might react together. They use math and computers to model these systems. They might use thermodynamics to study changes in energy. They also use fluid mechanics to study how materials flow. This helps them understand how things move through pipes and tanks.

Engineers use special maps to plan everything. One map is called a process flow diagram, or PFD. This shows tanks, pipes, and how things move. A more detailed map is the P&ID. This is a piping and instrumentation diagram. It shows the actual process in a very clear way. This map helps them write a guide for how to run the machines safely.

This field has a very interesting history. People have used chemical techniques for a long time. However, the field really started in the 1780s. This happened when people discovered thermodynamics and the law of conservation of mass. During the Industrial Revolution, engineers learned through trial and error. By 1980, the term process engineering became its own special area. It grew from chemical engineering into many other types of work.

You can find process engineers in many different places. They work in agriculture to process crops. They help make food, dairy, and even beer or whiskey. They also make cosmetics and medicines for people. Some engineers work with minerals or even computer parts. Their work is all around us in the things we use every day.
