Engineering design process

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Engineers use a special way of working to create new things.

This is called the engineering design process. It helps them build products, systems, and even ways to make things. This process includes thinking about the whole life of a product. This means looking at how it is made and how it is fixed. It also includes how to recycle or dispose of it later. Engineers do not just follow a straight line. They often repeat steps to make their work better. This is called being iterative. They go back and change things as they learn new facts.

There are many steps in this process.

First, engineers do research to find information. They might look in libraries, on the internet, or at government documents. They can even use reverse engineering to study products that already exist. Next, they set design requirements. These are the rules the new product must follow. They decide what the item must do and how it must work. Then, they perform a feasibility study. This helps them decide if an idea is actually possible. They check if the idea is achievable and if it stays within a budget.

Generating ideas is a very important part of the work.

This stage is often called ideation or concept generation. Engineers use different ways to think of new solutions. They might use brainstorming to talk about ideas in a small group. Some use a method called synectics, where they imagine they are the object itself. Others use morphological analysis to list different parts of a design in a chart. Once they have ideas, they must do a concept evaluation. This lets them compare the strengths and weaknesses of each choice. They want to pick the best possible solution.

After picking an idea, the real building plans begin.

Engineers start with a preliminary design. This creates a general framework or a basic plan for the project. Next, they move to the detailed design phase. This is when they create very exact descriptions. Many engineers use computer-aided design, or CAD, for this job. CAD programs help make the process more efficient. They can even help make parts lighter without losing quality. These programs can calculate how much stress a part will feel. This helps ensure the final product is strong and safe.

Finally, engineers must plan for making many items at once.

This is called production planning. They must choose the right materials and the best tools to use. They also decide the order of the steps for making the product. They might use special tools called jigs or fixtures. Before they finish, they often test a prototype. A prototype is a model used for testing. This ensures the mass-produced version meets all the required standards. This whole process is taught at universities all over the world. It is a vital skill for solving human needs.
