Engineering design process

Engineers use a special set of steps to make new things.

This is called the engineering design process. It is a way to build products and systems. Engineers do not just follow a straight line. They often go back to old steps to fix things. This is called being iterative. It means they repeat steps to make the design better.

First, engineers do research. They look for facts in books or on the internet. They might even study products that already exist. Next, they set design requirements. These are the rules for the new product. They decide what the item must do and how it should work.

Then, they check if the idea is feasible. This means they see if the plan can really work. They check if it fits the cost. After that, they use ideation to make new ideas. Ideation is the mental process of making up ideas. They might use brainstorming, where a small group talks about ideas.

Next comes the design. They start with a preliminary design. This is a general framework or basic plan. Then they move to detailed design. They use CAD, which stands for computer-aided design. These computer programs help them make very exact drawings. Finally, they plan for production. This is how they make many of the items at once.
