technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Engineers design circuits to make things work. These circuits can be very small. They might be inside a tiny microchip.

Some circuits are big enough to run a movie theater TV.

Design starts with a specification. This is a list of needs. It says what the circuit must do. It also lists rules for size and weight. It may say how much power the circuit can use.

Next, designers make a block diagram. This is a map of parts. Each block shows one job. This helps teams work on small tasks. They also make a schematic. A schematic is a drawing of the electrical paths.

After the drawing, designers use computer simulations. This is a way to test the design on a screen. They also build a prototype. A prototype is a test version of the real thing.

This step is very important for safety. It helps prevent fires or hot wires.

Finally, they choose the real parts. They make a plan for the final product. This plan is called a blueprint.
