Integrated circuit

technology Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

An integrated circuit is a tiny group of electronic parts. People often call them microchips or just chips.

These parts are made on a thin, flat piece of silicon. Silicon is a type of semiconductor material. This means it can help control how electricity flows.

Chips hold many different parts together. These include transistors, resistors, and capacitors. A transistor is a tiny switch that controls electricity.

In the past, people built circuits one part at a time. This was slow and expensive. Now, we use a way called photolithography to print them. This method prints all the parts at once as one unit. Because of this, chips are small, fast, and cheap to make.

Chips have changed the world. They are in computers, phones, and even TVs.

Modern chips are very powerful. A single chip might have billions of transistors. Many of these can fit on a space the size of a fingernail. This lets our gadgets do many big jobs at once.
