Engineering ethics

technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Engineering ethics is a special field of study. It looks at the moral rules for people who build things. These engineers have duties to many different groups. They must look after the public and their clients. They also have duties to their own profession. This field is very close to the study of philosophy. It helps people decide what is right and wrong in technology.

How does this system work in real life? Engineers follow a set of rules called a code of ethics. These codes act like a guide for hard choices. One main rule is to put public safety first. This means protecting the health and welfare of everyone. Engineers must also be honest and truthful in their work. They should only work on things they truly understand. They must also avoid conflicts of interest when helping clients.

This field grew because of many sad accidents in history. In 1876, there was the Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster. Then the Tay Bridge collapsed in 1879, killing sixty people. In 1907, the Quebec Bridge also fell down. Later, the Boston molasses disaster happened in 1919. These failures forced engineers to change how they worked. They realized they needed better technical and ethical standards.

Many groups were formed to help set these high standards. The American Society of Civil Engineers started in 1851. The American Institute of Mining Engineers started in 1871. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers started in 1880. The AIEE adopted its own code of ethics in 1912. The ASCE and ASME both did this in 1914. In the US, the National Society of Professional Engineers released rules in 1946.

You might see these rules in action every day. In Canada, engineers often wear a symbolic ring. This ring comes from the 1907 Quebec Bridge collapse. It reminds them of a serious oath to be ethical. In the US, a Board of Ethical Review was made in 1954. They have given nearly 500 opinions to help engineers. Today, engineers also think about protecting our environment. They work hard to make sure our world stays safe.
