Engineering management

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Engineering management is a special way to run big companies. It combines two different worlds. First, it uses engineering to solve technical problems. Second, it uses management to organize people and plans. This job helps oversee how a complex business works every day.

A manager in this field might look at how a machine works and how much it costs to build. They help make sure that big projects stay on track. This career is important for any business that builds high-tech products.

There are many ways this work happens step by step. One way is through supply chain management. This is the way a company plans how goods move from a starting place to the person who buys them.

Another way is through product engineering. This is the process of designing a device so it can be made and sold. Engineers look at the cost, the quality, and how long the product will last. They also use a method called design for manufacturability. This means they design products so they are easy to make in a factory.

This field has a long history in schools around the world. The Stevens Institute of Technology is believed to have the oldest department. It started in 1908 as the School of Business Engineering. Later, Syracuse University offered the first graduate degree in the United States in 1957.

In 1967, the Missouri University of Science and Technology founded the first department with the exact name "Engineering Management." Many other countries have important programs too. For example, Germany had a department in 1927 at the Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg.

Students learn many specific things in these programs. They might study project management or how to lead a team.

They also learn about engineering law. These are the rules that keep the public safe. A manager must use these laws to say "no" if a project is moving too fast or costs too much. They might also study industrial engineering. This is a way to stop the waste of time, money, and energy. By using math and statistics, they find the best way to make decisions.

Engineering management links to many things you might already know. If you have ever seen a toy or a phone, an engineer helped design it.

A manager helped make sure the factory could build it correctly. It is also like being the captain of a ship. The captain must know how the engines work, but they also must lead the crew. In an engineering firm, managers must share information quickly to succeed. This is different from a law firm, which often keeps secrets. In engineering, clear communication helps keep everyone safe.
