Environmental science is a way to study our world.

It is an interdisciplinary field, which means it brings many subjects together. Scientists use biology, chemistry, and physics to understand nature. They also use math, geology, and engineering. This helps them solve hard jobs in the environment. By looking at many things at once, they can understand complex systems. This work helps us protect the planet from many different problems.

This science works by looking at how things connect.

One part might look at how living things interact. This is called ecology. Another part might look at how chemicals move through the air or water. Scientists might even study how people use resources like soil and trees. They use math to measure these changes very carefully. By following these steps, they can find ways to fix damage. They turn observations into real plans for a cleaner world.

People have cared about the environment for a very long time.

Around 6000 BCE, people in Israel and Jordan saw their lands change. They lost many trees, which is called deforestation. In 2700 BCE, Mesopotamia made laws to stop this from happening. In 2500 BCE, people in the Indus River Valley studied water to stay healthy. Much later, in 1735, Carolus Linnaeus helped name living things. These early steps helped the science grow over many years.

Modern environmental science grew fast in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1962, Rachel Carson wrote a famous book called Silent Spring. This book helped people care more about nature. In 1969, two big events happened in the United States. An oil spill hit Santa Barbara, and the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire. These events led to new laws like the Clean Water Act. In 1970, the very first Earth Day was celebrated around the world.

Today, scientists work on huge global problems.

They study the greenhouse effect, which is how gases trap heat in the air. In 1985, researchers found a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. This discovery helped countries ban certain harmful gases. Now, many nations follow the Paris Agreement from 2016. This treaty aims to keep the Earth from getting too hot. It shows how science helps the whole world work together.
