Long ago, people noticed changes in their land. In Mesopotamia, laws were made to save trees. In the Indus River Valley, people studied water. They wanted to keep their towns clean. In the 1960s, this field grew very fast. Rachel Carson wrote a famous book called Silent Spring. It made people think about nature. In 1969, an oil spill happened in Santa Barbara.
