Scientists want to save species and their homes. They also protect ecosystems, which are groups of living things that work together. This field is very important right now. Some experts say it is a "discipline with a deadline." This is because many living things are in danger of extinction. Extinction means a species disappears forever.

This science started as a new field in 1978. A group of experts met in California to talk about it. They were worried about losing forests and different types of life. They wanted to use many types of science to help. This includes studying how animals breed and how they live in groups.
