An endangered species is a group of living things at risk. They may go extinct soon. This means they could disappear from the world forever.

Many things cause this risk. People change the land where animals live. This is called habitat loss. Other causes include poaching, which is illegal hunting. Changes in the air, or climate change, also cause risk.

Scientists use a special list to track these groups. It is called the IUCN Red List. This list helps us know which species need help. It uses different groups to show the level of risk. Some species are called "critically endangered." This means they have the highest risk of disappearing in the wild. Others are called "vulnerable." This means they have a high risk.

In the United States, a law called the Endangered Species Act helps. It protects animals and their homes. Some species have even recovered because of this law. In Brazil, people saved the golden lion tamarin. They even put its face on money to help people learn about it.
