Endangered species

This article covers sensitive topics: climate. Parents can manage visibility in Parental Controls.

An endangered species is a group of living things at risk of extinction. Extinction means that every single member of that species has died. This could happen to a whole group of animals across the entire world. It might also happen to a group in just one specific area.

Many things cause this risk for living things. Human activity is a big reason why species become endangered. People might take away the places where animals live, which is called habitat loss. Other causes include poaching, which is illegal hunting. Climate change can also make life very hard for many species.

Scientists use a special system to track these risks. The International Union for Conservation of the Nature (IUCN) makes the Red List. This is a famous list that shows the status of many species worldwide.

They use different categories to show how much danger a species is in. "Critically Endangered" means there is a very high risk of extinction in the wild. "Endangered" means there is a higher risk than other groups. "Vulnerable" means there is a high risk of facing trouble. They also track species that are "Extinct in the Wild." These are animals that only live in places like zoos or farms.

Different countries have different ways of helping. In the United States, there is a law called the Endangered Species Act of 1973. This law helps protect animals and their critical habitats.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is responsible for classifying these species. They also create recovery plans to help populations grow again. In Brazil, the government uses laws to protect the forest and its animals. They can fine people or companies that commit environmental crimes. They can even take away wildlife that was taken illegally.

Brazil is a very special place for nature. It has many different areas like the Amazon forest and the Atlantic forest.

However, wildlife trafficking is a big challenge there. This is when people illegally move animals or plants. In Brazil, birds make up about 80% of the species that are trafficked. One great success happened with the golden lion tamarin. People worked hard to save them from extinction. They even put the tamarin on the 20 reais banknote to teach people about them.

Protecting species can be a hard job for everyone. Some people worry that protecting animals might make it harder to build things on land. In the United States, some groups have argued about these rules. Even so, the law has helped many animals. Nineteen species have been removed from the list because they recovered. In the northeastern United States, 93% of protected species are now stable or growing.

It shows that when we understand the science, we can help the world stay healthy.
