Biodiversity is the huge variety of life on Earth. It includes all genes, species, and ecosystems in a region.

When species disappear forever, it is called extinction. This loss can be temporary if we fix the damage. However, if we cannot fix it, the loss is permanent. Scientists call this period the sixth mass extinction.

This is happening much faster than natural changes in history. The current rate is 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal. This creates a serious crisis for life on land and in the ocean.

Most of this loss comes from human activities. One big cause is habitat destruction, like cutting down forests.

People also use land for intensive farming. Other causes include air and water pollution. Over-exploitation and invasive species also cause harm. Climate change is another growing threat to all life. For example, coral reefs might be lost by the year 2100. This happens if global warming continues at the current rate. Habitat loss is currently a bigger driver than climate change.

Many people work to stop these changes. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity aims to protect wilderness areas. However, many goals have been hard to reach. In 2010, leaders set twenty biodiversity targets called the Aichi Targets. By 2020, only six were partially achieved.

Scientists also use the IUCN Red List to track species. In 2021, about 28 percent of assessed species were threatened. That is 37,400 species in total. This is much higher than the 16,119 species threatened in 2006.

Some places are extra important for life. We call these areas biodiversity hotspots. They host a huge amount of different life. Since 1988, these hotspots grew from 10 to 34.

Even though they cover only 2.3 percent of the world, they host 50 percent of all vascular plant species. Many of these are in tropical regions. Tropical rainforests host more than half of the world's biodiversity. Protecting these small areas is a big job for the planet.

Different living things face different risks. Wildlife populations declined by an average of 69 percent since 1970.

In the ocean, overfishing is a major problem.

Large fish populations have fallen by 94 percent. Even tiny earthworms are losing their numbers in farm soil. In the air, 51 bird species are critically endangered. Plants are also at risk, with one-third of tree species threatened. All these pieces connect to keep our world healthy.
