Agricultural expansion

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Agricultural expansion means using more land for farming. This includes land for crops and pastures for animals. People do this to grow more food and energy. Our world has a growing number of people. Experts think there may be 10 billion people by the end of this century. This big change is happening mostly in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Most modern farming uses intensive methods. This means growing a few types of crops very well. Large farms often grow things like soya bean or oil palm. They also use land for cattle ranching. This way of farming can lead to forest fragmentation. This happens when forests are broken into smaller pieces. It also causes much deforestation, which is the loss of trees.

This process has been growing for a long time. It is a result of the need for more food. As populations grow, the need for food also grows. This creates a cycle that keeps the expansion going. Many growing economies strive for more agricultural land. This can lead to activities called land grabbing. These changes are happening all over the world today.

We can look at real numbers to see how this works. Between 2000 and 2010, large farms caused 40 percent of tropical deforestation. Local subsistence farming caused another 33 percent. In Borneo, the palm oil industry caused massive deforestation. In South America, land is changed for soya bean production. The FAO predicts that arable land use will grow until 2050. Most of this growth will come from developing countries.

This expansion affects many parts of our planet. It can cause a loss of biodiversity, which is the variety of living things. Many ecosystems on land and in water may be hurt. Animals can lose their habitats, or their homes. This can lead to land degradation and overexploitation. Because of these effects, we need sustainable practices. Sustainable ways of farming help keep the Earth healthy.
