Environmental conflicts are social struggles about the natural world. These fights happen when nature is damaged or when resources are shared unfairly.

Some people call these ecological distribution conflicts. This happens when one group gets the benefits of a resource, but another group gets the pollution. For example, a factory might dump waste into a river. This harms the local people who rely on that water to live. These conflicts can happen in many different places around the globe. They can even make natural disasters harder for people to handle.

Many different groups take part in these struggles. Local communities often try to protect their homes and lands. They might fight against mining or the disposal of hazardous waste. Companies and governments are also involved in these decisions. Sometimes, people move because their land is no longer safe to live on. These people are known as environmental migrants. Many fights focus on the rights of indigenous people or peasants. These groups often depend on the ocean or the land for their food.

These conflicts often start because of the industrial economy. This system needs a huge amount of energy and materials to work. Since less than 10% of materials are recycled, companies must find new resources. They do this by claiming new lands or making old sites work faster. Most conflicts happen in three main areas: mining, energy, and waste disposal. A study of over 2,743 conflicts found that mining was the biggest issue at 21%. Fossil energy was next at 17%. Land use and water management also cause many disputes.

Researchers use special tools to track these events. One important tool is the Environmental Justice Atlas. It was founded by Leah Temper and Joan Martinez-Alier. It is located at a university in Barcelona. This atlas helps people understand the political results of these fights. In April 2020, it had documented 3,100 conflicts from all over the world. By July 2021, that number grew to 3,500 entries.

People use many different ways to stand up for the earth. Most local groups start by organizing themselves. They often use non-violent tactics to make their voices heard.

Some movements use slogans to explain their goals. They might say "keep the coal in the hole" to protect the air. These movements can be very successful at changing things. About 17% of the conflicts in the atlas ended in a success. This means they stopped a bad project or shared resources more fairly. This work helps create a more sustainable world for everyone.
