Green politics is a way of thinking about how we live together. It is also called ecopolitics. This movement wants to build a society that is sustainable for the Earth. This means people live in a way that does not use up all our natural resources. Most green politics is based on environmentalism. It also focuses on social justice and nonviolence. Many supporters also believe in grassroots democracy. This is a way for regular people to have a say in how things work.

Green politics is built on several big ideas. Many people follow the Four Pillars of the Green Party. These pillars are ecological wisdom, social justice, grassroots democracy, and nonviolence. Some groups use even more values to guide them. These can include things like respecting diversity and having a global responsibility. Another big idea is green economics. This way of thinking says that the health of our planet is vital for human well-being. It suggests that we should not borrow from the future to pay for things today.

People have worried about nature for a very long time. Even in ancient Rome and China, people complained about pollution. Later, thinkers like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Henry David Thoreau wrote about nature. In the late 1800s, groups like the Sierra Club began to form. The Sierra Club was founded in San Francisco in 1892. These early groups were part of conservation movements. They wanted to protect the wild parts of the world.

Modern green political parties began to grow in the 1970s. The United Tasmania Group in Australia was the first party based on environmental issues. They started in March 1972 to stop forest damage. In 1972, the Values Party also formed in New Zealand. The German Green Party became very famous and used a sunflower as its symbol. A woman named Petra Kelly helped name the party "the Greens." In 1983, the German Greens won 27 seats in their national parliament.

Green politics has helped people reach high positions in government. In 2004, Indulis Emsis became the Prime Minister of Latvia. He was the first green politician to lead a country. Later, Raimonds Vējonis became the President of Latvia. He was the first green head of state in the world. In 2016, Alexander Van der Bellen won the election for President of Austria. He was the first green president chosen by a popular vote. These leaders show how green ideas have moved into the halls of power.
