It is a movement of people who want to support life and nature. These people work to save habitats and the things around us. They want to keep the climate and the earth systems healthy. This can mean stopping pollution or protecting many different plants and animals. Some call this the green movement. It is all about finding a balance between humans and nature. We need natural systems to live, so we must keep them working well.

There are many ways to be an environmentalist. Some people focus on science to learn how nature works. Others use activism to protest and demand change. Some people work for environmental justice to help communities facing pollution. You can help by changing how you live every day. This might mean using renewable energy or buying things more carefully. Some people even choose to have smaller families to use fewer resources. Every action is a way to give the natural world a stronger voice.

People have cared for nature for a very long time. In the 6th century BC, Mahavira taught Jainism in ancient India. He spoke about the connection between all living things. In the 630s AD, the Caliph Abu Bakr told his army not to harm trees. During the 9th to 13th centuries, many Islamic doctors wrote about pollution in the air and water. In 1224, Francis of Assisi wrote a poem called the Canticle of the Sun. He showed great love and respect for the natural world.

History shows us that leaders have made rules to protect the earth. In 1272, King Edward I of England banned certain coal in London. This was because the smoke was a big problem for the city. In 1582, King Philip II of Spain ordered people to save his forests. Later, the Industrial Revolution changed everything with huge factories and coal use. In 1863, Britain passed the Alkali Acts to control bad air pollution.

These were some of the first modern laws to help the environment.

In the United States, famous thinkers helped start the movement. Henry David Thoreau lived a simple life to study nature. He wrote a famous book called Walden about his experiences. John Muir was also a great leader for nature. He loved the mountains and helped create Yosemite National Park. He even started the Sierra Club in 1892. Today, environmentalism connects to many things like health and human rights. It helps us understand our place in the big world of ecology.
