Her life involved many different places and important studies. She was born in Günzburg, Bavaria, in 1947. Her family moved to the United States in 1959. She went to school in Georgia and Virginia during those years. Later, she studied political science at American University in Washington, D.C. She earned her bachelor's degree there in 1970. She also earned a master's degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1971. She lived in the United States until she returned to West Germany in 1970.

Petra used her voice to lead many important campaigns. She worked at the European Commission in Brussels for many years. During this time, she fought for peace and the environment. In 1979, she helped start the German Green Party, known as Die Grünen. In 1981, she was part of a massive protest in Bonn. About 400,000 people joined that protest against nuclear weapons. In 1983, she was elected to the Bundestag. The Bundestag is the place where German leaders meet to make laws.

She was a very brave person when speaking to leaders. In May 1983, she and other members unfurled a banner in East Berlin. The banner said, "The Greens – Swords to Ploughshares." This was a message about turning weapons into tools for peace. Later that year, she met with Erich Honecker, the leader of the German Democratic Republic. She wore a pullover with that same peace message on it. She asked him why he did not support peace in the same way as the West. In 1984, she wrote a book called Fighting for Hope.

Petra's work left a lasting mark on the world. In 2006, the UK Environment Agency named her one of the most important people for saving the planet. They placed her 45th on their list of great campaigners and scientists. Her life has even been shown in movies and books. A film called Happiness is a Warm Gun was made about her in 2001. A novel called Petra was written in 2020. She is remembered as a woman who worked hard for a nonviolent world.
