He was a very influential thinker in the 20th century. He did not just make paintings or statues. He used his art to talk about how people live together. This idea is called sociology. He also cared about humanism, which is the value of human life. Beuys wanted art to be a way to help the world. He believed that everyone could be creative in their own way.

He chose these because they held warmth and energy. He also made many drawings that explored science and myths. Some of his work was performance art, which he called Kunst Aktionen. This meant the art was a live event. These shows were sometimes called Art Happenings. He used these actions to share his deep ideas.

His life had many big changes and hard moments. He was born in Krefeld, Germany, in 1921. As a boy, he learned to play the piano and cello. He also liked learning about nature and history. During a war, he served as a radio operator in a plane. His plane crashed in the snow in 1944. Beuys told a famous story about this crash. He said nomadic people found him and used fat and felt to keep him warm.

In 1947, he helped start a group called the Thursday Group. This group held many talks and concerts. He was a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf for many years. He taught there from 1961 until 1972. He even helped start the German Green Party to protect nature.

His work connects many different worlds together. He mixed art with science and politics. He was a member of a group called Fluxus. This group liked to break the rules of art. He was also very different from the artist Andy Warhol. Some people even called him an "ideal antagonist" to Warhol. Beuys showed that art could be about more than just looking pretty. It could be about ideas, nature, and how we treat each other.
