Fluxus was a large community of creative people. They were artists, composers, poets, and designers. This group lived and worked during the 1960s and 1970s. They were mostly friends who liked to help each other.

They had very radical ideas about what art could be. Some people even called their group a laboratory. This is because they loved to test new ideas. They wanted to see how art could change society.

These artists focused on the way they made things. They cared more about the process than the final object. They often used chance to guide their work. This means they let unexpected things happen during their art.

They performed special events called scores. These were sets of instructions for an action. They also made noise music and concrete poetry. Some artists even used video or designed buildings. They wanted art to be a way for people to interact.

Many of their ideas came from a composer named John Cage. He taught classes in New York City from 1957 to 1959. His lessons helped artists learn about chance and music.

Another big influence was a man named Marcel Duchamp. He was a French artist who made "readymades." A readymade is just an ordinary object used as art. Duchamp showed that art did not need special skills. This helped Fluxus artists feel free to use anything.

George Maciunas is often called the founder of Fluxus. He was a graphic designer from Lithuania. He came to New York after World War II. In 1961, he picked the name Fluxus for a magazine.

He later moved to Wiesbaden, West Germany. The group held many festivals in many different cities. They met in places like London, Amsterdam, and Stockholm. These festivals helped the community grow very strong. Many artists traveled to these places to work together.

Fluxus helped create many new ways to make art. One idea was called intermedia, which means mixing different art forms.

They also helped start conceptual art and video art. Many famous people were part of this group. This includes Yoko Ono and Nam June Paik. They even made special Flux boxes to share art. These boxes held many small works for people to enjoy. Their work still changes how we think about art today.
