Performance poetry is a special kind of art made for an audience.

Instead of just reading words from a page, these poets use their voices and bodies. They might use music, funny movements, or even sudden speech to tell their stories. This art is about more than just the words themselves. It is about the feeling of sharing a moment with other people. The poet is in charge of the event, but they always include the listeners. This makes the experience feel very alive and shared.

There are many different ways to perform poetry. Some poets write poems specifically to be spoken out loud. Others, like David Antin, make up their poems right in front of the crowd. This is called improvising. In the past, people in oral cultures used tricks like rhyme and repetition to remember their poems. They would perform from memory but add their own special style each time. Today, technology helps poets reach even more people. Students might use podcasts or video calls to share their work with the world.

This way of sharing poems has a very long history. Long ago, before books were common, poets were the main entertainers. They traveled and shared stories through spoken word. When printing presses were invented, poets changed into writers for private reading. However, the 20th century brought a big change back to sound. In 1916, Hugo Ball performed a sound poem in Zürich, Switzerland.

He even wore a cardboard costume and had to be carried onto the stage! This helped start a new era where sound became just as important as the written word.

In the 1980s, a poet named Hedwig Gorski helped define this art. She used the term "performance poetry" to describe her work on the radio. She even worked with the East of Eden Band to mix music and poetry. During this time, cities like Austin, Texas, had a very busy poetry scene. Many unique artists lived there, such as Harryette Mullen and Joy Cole. Even the National Endowment for the Arts had to change its rules. At first, they thought performance poetry was theater, but they later moved it to literature.

Performance poetry connects to many things we see in our world today. It is a bridge between old traditions and new technology. The energy from live poetry clubs and cafes eventually led to the slam poetry scenes we see now. You might even see these styles on television programs like Def Poetry Jam. Whether it is a poet reading in a small cafe or a student on a podcast, the goal is the same. It is about using the human voice to make a connection. This makes poetry a living, breathing thing that belongs to everyone.
