She is famous for creating a style called performance poetry. She first used this name in a press release in 1981. This style is meant to be spoken out loud to an audience. It is not meant to be just read in a book. Her work often mixes spoken words with live music. She worked with a professional jazz band called East of Eden. The music was composed by her husband, D'Jalma Garnier. The songs could sound like jazz, rock and roll, or country and western.

Her art works in a very specific way. She uses her voice to bring poems to life through sound. Some people say her voice sounds almost like singing. She uses what she calls "neo-verse drama" for her plays. This is a special way of writing a play using verse. Her work was often shared through radio broadcasts on KUT-FM. These recordings were sent to radio stations all over the world. She wanted to share her art outside of the main music groups. This helped make performance poetry more popular during the 1980s. She also wrote a column for The Austin Chronicle called "Litera." In Polish, this word means a letter of the alphabet.

Her family history is a big part of who she is. Gorski is a first-generation Polish American. Her parents and sister moved from Galicia, Poland, to the United States. This happened after World War II ended. Her father was in the Polish Underground when he was fourteen. He later joined the United States Army. The family arrived in New Orleans in 1949 on a ship called the General Sturgis.

Her work connects to many different kinds of art and ideas. She was influenced by the poet Allen Ginsberg and his poem "Howl." She also admired the singer Bob Dylan for his use of language. Gorski uses her poetry to talk about important social issues. She writes about race and gender in the United States. She also speaks for "invisible minorities" who feel left out. Some people even call her the "American Mayakovsky." She believes that "poetry is a hammer" used to make a change. Her art is a way to show the power of the human voice.
