It can include many different things. Some art is made with digital tools like a computer or a tablet. Other art is made by the computer itself using math or code. People use many names for this kind of work. They might call it computer art, electronic art, or new media art. This art matters because it gives people many new ways to be creative.

It expands what artists can do in our modern world.

There are many ways to create these works. An artist might use a mouse or a stylus on a graphics tablet. A stylus is like a special pen for a computer screen. This allows them to make digital paintings that look like real ones. Some artists use 2D graphics, which is like drawing on paper. Other artists use 3D graphics to build virtual worlds. They can even use artificial intelligence to help.

In these cases, a person can type words to tell the computer what to draw. The computer then turns those words into a visual picture.

Digital art has a long and interesting history. In the early 1960s, John Whitney made art using math on a computer. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland created Sketchpad, which was the first interactive computer graphics tool. Later, the famous artist Salvador Dalí used computers to help make his art. He worked on pieces that looked like portraits of Abraham Lincoln. In July 1985, Andy Warhol used a computer called an Amiga.

He used a program to add color to a video image of Debbie Harry. These early steps helped change how we think about art.

Today, digital art comes in many specific forms. Some artists make computer demos, which are moving pictures with sound. These are often made using computer programs in real time. Other artists create digital installations that fill up a whole room.

One example is "Boundary Functions" by Scott Snibbe. This work uses light on the floor to draw lines between people. There is also internet art, which lives on the web. Some artists even use blockchain technology to prove they own their digital work. This has become very popular since the years 2020 and 2021.

Digital art connects to many things we see every day. It uses the same hardware we use for school or work. This includes tablets, 3D scanners, and virtual reality headsets. It also helps us protect our history. Scientists use 3D scans to save objects that might be lost to war or natural disasters. Even museums and auction houses like Sotheby's now sell digital art.
