Left-wing politics is a way of thinking about how society should work. People who follow these ideas often seek social equality and egalitarianism. This means they want everyone to be treated fairly. They often look out for people who are disadvantaged. They believe some inequalities are not right and should be changed. Many different groups believe in these ideas in different ways.

How these ideas work can vary a lot. Some people focus on who has power in a country. They want to help those without power stand up to those with it. They fight against oppression and for social recognition of different groups. Many left-wing ideas also focus on the economy. Some people want the government to help manage money and jobs. Others want workers to have more control through groups called trade unions.

The name "left" comes from a very famous time in history. During the French Revolution, leaders met in a group called the National Assembly. The people who wanted to change things sat to the left of the chair. The people who wanted to keep things the same sat on the right. This seating arrangement gave us the words we use today. The term became even more common after the French monarchy was restored in 1815.

Many famous thinkers and movements have shaped the left. Karl Marx was a person who created important economic theories. During the 19th and 20th centuries, groups like socialists and communists became very well known. Some people also focus on the environment and protecting the earth. In the 1970s, many unions began to campaign for nature. In Australia, a group led by Jack Mundy even used "green bans" to stop projects that hurt the environment.

You can see these ideas in many parts of life today. Many social movements are part of the left. This includes the civil rights movement and the feminist movement. It also includes groups fighting for LGBTQ rights and environmental protection. Some people believe in working together across the whole world. They use the slogan, "Workers of the world, unite!" This shows they want people in different countries to help each other.
