Left-wing politics, also known as leftism, describes a range of political ideologies. These ideas focus on achieving social equality and egalitarianism. Egalitarianism is the belief that all people are equal and deserve equal rights. Left-wing thinkers often oppose social hierarchies. A hierarchy is a system where people are ranked one above another. They seek to reduce or abolish inequalities that they believe are unjustified. This is often done through radical means to change how society works.

To understand the mechanism of left-wing thought, one must look at how power is distributed. Political philosopher Marius Ostrowski argues that the left focuses on who holds power in a society. The goal is often to fight for "those without" against "those with." This involves fighting for empowerment and against oppression. It also means seeking parity, which is the state of being equal. Leftists aim for social recognition of marginalized groups. They prefer cooperation over competition to achieve these goals.

Economic beliefs on the left vary across a wide spectrum. Some advocate for the welfare state, where the government provides support to citizens. Others support Keynesian economics, which involves government management of the economy. Further left, some groups want the nationalization of the economy. Nationalization is when the state takes control of private industries. Other movements, like anarcho-syndicalism, want a decentralized economy. They believe in a system run by workers' councils and cooperatives. These groups prefer social ownership and local control over state or private control.

The term "left" has a specific historical origin. It began during the French Revolution in the late 18th century. In the French National Assembly, members sat according to their political views. The deputies who opposed the royal veto privilege sat to the left of the chair. The members who favored the royal veto sat on the right. The term became more common after the French monarchy was restored in 1815. In the late 19th century, the word "wing" was added to the terms. This was often used in a disparaging way to describe people with unorthodox views.

Many distinct ideologies emerged during the 19th and 20th centuries. Social liberalism and social democracy are often considered centre-left. These movements generally support some level of democracy in the economic sphere. However, the term "the Left" is often reserved for more critical movements. These include socialism, anarchism, communism, Marxism, and Leninism. Each of these groups has different views on how to organize society. For example, Karl Marx developed economic theories that influenced many of these groups. Some people separate Marx's economic theories from his political philosophy.

Environmentalism has also become a major part of left-wing politics. Thomas Paine was an early advocate for the collective human ownership of the world. In the 1970s, many unions and social movements began campaigning for the environment. In Australia, the Builders Labourers Federation used "green bans." These bans stopped development projects that were environmentally destructive. Some thinkers, like Barry Commoner, argued that capitalist technologies cause environmental degradation. This has led to the rise of eco-socialism. This ideology merges environmentalism with anti-capitalism.

Left-wing politics also connects to broader social and global issues. It includes movements for civil rights, feminism, and LGBTQ rights. It also encompasses the anti-war and multiculturalism movements. On a global scale, the movement often debates nationalism and imperialism. Many leftists support proletarian internationalism. This is the idea that workers should act in solidarity across national borders. This concept is famously captured in the slogan, "Workers of the world, unite!" This shows a desire for global cooperation to achieve social justice.
