Democratic socialism is a way of thinking about politics and the economy.

It combines two big ideas. First, it supports political democracy. This means people should vote and have a voice in their government. Second, it supports a socially owned economy. This means the community or the workers own the things used to make goods. These thinkers want to see economic democracy. They want workers to help manage their own workplaces. They believe this is the best way to achieve freedom and equality.

There are different ways this idea can work in real life. Some people want a slow and steady change. They might use rules and programs to make capitalism more fair. These people often support a strong welfare state to help people in need. Other people believe that big changes must happen all at once. They think the whole system needs to be replaced. They want to move from private ownership to collective ownership. This would mean the community owns the tools and land used for work. This change is often called a systemic transformation.

The history of these ideas goes back a long time. You can find roots in 19th-century Europe. The Chartist movement in the United Kingdom was one early example. They wanted more democratic decisions and public ownership of production. Later, groups like the Fabian Society in Britain promoted gradual changes. In Germany, Eduard Bernstein spoke about evolutionary socialism. During the 20th century, the movement grew because people disagreed with the Soviet Union. They wanted a version of socialism that was not run by a single party. They wanted to keep democracy alive while sharing wealth.

Democratic socialists are very clear about what they do not like. They oppose the Stalinist political system. They also reject the economic planning used in Marxist-Leninist states. These older systems were often called administrative-command models. They were seen as too centralized and not democratic enough. Democratic socialists want a system that is open and pluralistic. For example, the Democratic Socialists of America describe it as a decentralized economy. This means power is spread out rather than held by a few people in charge.

Many places around the world have used these ideas. Countries like France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have had socialist parties. These parties worked to build mixed economies. Some people call these social democratic systems democratic socialist. However, things changed after the Cold War ended. Many of these countries moved toward a new way of thinking called neoliberalism. This replaced the older social democratic ways. Even so, the debate about how to balance democracy and the economy continues today. It is a big part of how people think about fairness.
