A territorial dispute happens when political groups cannot agree on borders. This disagreement can involve land, water, or even the airspace above.

Groups often fight over natural resources like rivers or fertile farmland. They may also want minerals or petroleum found in the ground. Sometimes, culture, religion, or ethnic nationalism drives these disagreements. Disputes can also start because an old treaty used vague language. This makes it hard to know where one area ends and another begins.

Sometimes, a country might use military forces to hold a region. This is known as an occupied territory. An occupation can be a way to make a claim on land. It can also be a strategic move to create a buffer zone. This helps prevent a rival power from taking control. In other cases, an occupation might be used as a way to punish others. It can even be used as a bargaining chip in deals.

History shows many ways these lines are drawn. In some places, the borders are not clearly marked. For example, the parties in Kashmir use a Line of Control. This line acts as a de facto international border. It separates Indian-controlled land from Pakistani-controlled land. There is also a Line of Actual Control between India and China. In 1963, China and Pakistan made an agreement. This agreement means they do not claim each other's territory.

International law plays a huge role in these situations. The UN Charter says members must not use force against other states. They must respect the political independence of every state. This is important because a state needs a defined territory to exist. The 1933 Montevideo Convention lists several rules for a state. A state must have a permanent population and a government. It must also have a defined territory and the ability to talk with other states.

These disputes can be very difficult for world peace. They can lead to war or even terrorism. Some states might try to take land through an invasion. This is against international law. To solve these problems, some countries go to the International Court of Justice. For instance, Costa Rica and Nicaragua went to court in 2005. These legal steps help countries work through disagreements. They aim to protect the sovereignty and rights of every nation.
