A peace treaty is a formal agreement between two or more groups that are fighting. Most often, these groups are different countries or governments. A treaty is different from other ways of stopping a fight. An armistice is just an agreement to stop the fighting for a while. A surrender is when an army gives up its weapons. A ceasefire is a temporary stop to the fighting. Even if the guns go silent, a state of war can still exist in a legal way. A peace treaty is needed to end that legal state of war. It helps former enemies move into a legal state of peace.

Treaties often cover many important topics to make sure peace lasts. They might set the official borders between new lands. They can decide how to share resources like water or land. Some treaties talk about the status of refugees or prisoners of war. They can also help settle old debts between nations. Sometimes, a treaty even defines what counts as unjust behavior. In modern times, countries might use a peace process to reach a treaty. This involves taking small, careful steps to reach a goal that everyone wants.

People have been making treaties for thousands of years. One very famous old treaty was between the Egyptian and Hittite empires. This happened after a big battle in a place we now call Syria. The rulers were Ramesses II of Egypt and Hatusiliš III of the Hittites. They signed the treaty around 1274 BC because they were both facing other enemies. The treaty was written in two languages: Egyptian hieroglyphs and Akkadian cuneiform. It even included a plan to help each other if a third party attacked.

Another ancient example happened around 21 or 20 BC. The Roman Emperor Augustus signed a treaty with the Kushites. The Kushites were a powerful group from a region near Egypt. This agreement helped Rome keep its borders quiet and safe. It also helped the Kushites by getting them more land and stopping certain payments. This treaty showed that Augustus could make peace through talking instead of fighting. It even helped him look good to other leaders from places like India.

In modern history, some treaties have had very big effects on the world. The Treaty of Versailles ended the First World War. However, it was very harsh toward Germany. It forced Germany to pay large amounts of money and take all the blame. Some historians believe these hard rules helped lead to the Second World War in 1939. Today, the United Nations works to help countries solve problems through talking. The UN Charter even limits when countries are allowed to use military force. This helps prevent the need for many peace treaties in the future.
