Negotiation

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Negotiation is a special kind of dialogue between two or more groups. People use it to solve differences or to reach a goal. Sometimes, people want to gain an advantage for themselves. Other times, they want to find an outcome that makes everyone happy. The main goal is to agree on things that matter to everyone involved.

A good negotiator tries to understand what others need. This helps them close deals and avoid fights. It can also help people build strong new relationships.

There are two main ways that people approach these talks. The first way is called distributive negotiation. This is often like sharing a single, fixed pie. If one person takes a huge slice, there is less for everyone else. This is sometimes called a win-lose game. People often do this when they are haggling over a price. For example, you might use this when buying a car or a house.

In these cases, the parties might not see each other again.

The second way is called integrative negotiation. Many people call this a win-win situation. Instead of fighting over one small pie, people try to expand it. They look for ways to make the total value much bigger. This can happen through trade-offs where people swap things they value differently. It works best when there is a high level of trust.

This method focuses on solving problems together rather than fighting a battle.

Negotiation has a very old history. The word comes from the early 15th century. It started from the Old French word "negociacion." This came from the Latin words "neg" and "otium." These words meant business, trade, or traffic. By the late 1570s, the meaning changed a bit. It began to mean communicating to find a mutual agreement. This showed a shift from just doing business to bargaining about business.

Many different people act as professional negotiators today. Some are called diplomats or legislators. Others work as peace negotiators or hostage negotiators. Even machines can perform what is called automated negotiation.

Sometimes, a third person helps by using mediation. In mediation, a neutral person helps two sides talk. This is different from arbitration where a third person makes the final decision. Negotiation helps keep our world running smoothly.
