Three different countries claim parts of this large region. India claims the whole area based on a legal paper from 1947. Pakistan claims most of the land because many people there are Muslim. China also claims some parts in the northeast, like Aksai Chin. This disagreement has led to many wars and fights over many years. It remains a very important and serious issue in the world today.

Today, the land is split between these three nations. India controls about 55% of the total land area. This includes the Kashmir Valley and most of Ladakh. Pakistan controls about 30% of the land. This area includes Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. China controls the remaining 15% of the territory.

A special boundary called the Line of Control separates the Indian and Pakistani sides. This line was created after a ceasefire helped stop the fighting.

This conflict began during the partition of India in 1947. Before this, the region was a princely state ruled by a Hindu leader named Maharaja Hari Singh.

Most of his people were Muslim, but the ruler was Hindu. The Maharaja wanted to keep his land independent from both India and Pakistan. However, after tribal groups from Pakistan invaded, the Maharaja asked India for help. He signed an instrument of accession to join India on October 26, 1947.

This decision started a war between the two new nations.

Many wars have happened since that first fight in 1947. India and Pakistan fought wars in 1965 and 1971.

China also joined the conflict by fighting India in 1962. In 1999, another armed fight broke out in a place called Kargil. There was also a large rebellion in the Kashmir Valley starting in 1989. These events have caused a lot of pain for the people living there. Many thousands of people have been hurt or lost their lives during these times.

Life in the region has been very difficult for many civilians. In the early 1990s, many Kashmiri Hindus had to leave the Kashmir Valley.

There has been a lot of tension between local people and security forces. Groups like Amnesty International have reported that many people have been treated unfairly. People in both Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered areas have faced many hard challenges. The history of this land shows how much people struggle when borders and rules are not agreed upon.
