Today, the region is split between three different countries. India, Pakistan, and China all control different parts of the land. Because they do not agree on the borders, it is a place of dispute. This makes it one of the most militarized zones in the world.

Different groups manage the land in various ways. Pakistan administers areas like Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

India and Pakistan have a line called the "line of control." This line was agreed upon in 1972 to divide their portions. However, neither country sees this as a permanent international boundary.

The history of this land is very long and complex. For many centuries, different dynasties ruled the region. Hindu dynasties ruled until the year 1346.

After that, Muslim rule began with Rinchan Shah in 1320. The Mughal Empire also held the land for a time. Later, the Sikh Empire took control of the Kashmir Valley in 1819.

This changed the way people lived under new leaders.

In 1846, a new state was formed through a treaty.

Gulab Singh became the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. This state brought together many different types of people. In the central valley, most people were Muslim.

In the east, people in Ladakh were often Buddhist. Other areas had many different groups, including Hindus and Sikhs. This mix of people made the region very diverse.

Kashmir is known for many things throughout history. The name might come from an ancient sage named Kashyapa. Some people believe it means "Kashyapa's Mountain." The region was also a famous center for religion. It was an important place for both Hinduism and Buddhism. Even in the past, people from far away visited the land. Travelers like the Chinese scholar Huientsang wrote about it. Today, the region remains a very important part of South Asian history.
