Water conflict happens when people fight over water resources. This includes disputes about who can use the water. Sometimes, water or water systems are even used as weapons. People might fight to control a river or a sea. This can be a cause of a fight. It can also be a tool used during a war.

These disputes happen in different ways. Some fights occur between two or more countries. These are called interstate conflicts. They often happen when a river crosses a border. Other fights happen inside just one country. These are called intrastate conflicts. For example, farmers might fight city users for water.

Most conflicts happen over fresh water. This is because humans need it for basic needs. We need it to drink and to grow food. We also use it to make electricity. When water is scarce, competition grows. This can lead to tension or even aggression. Water scarcity makes these disputes much harder to solve. Large populations and climate change make this a growing problem. As the world population increases, we need more water.

History shows many different kinds of water issues. The Pacific Institute has a database called the Water Conflict Chronology. It lists violence over water going back 4,500 years. The database has more than 1,900 examples of violence. It tracks the date and the location of each event. It also looks at why the conflict started. Some fights start because water is a trigger. This means people fight because they cannot get enough water. Other times, water is used as a weapon. Sometimes, water systems become a casualty of a war.

Water is also very important for business and trade. Many industries need water to work every single day. This includes fishing, farming, and making things in factories. In the 1880s, the British Empire and the United States clashed. They fought over sealing fisheries in the Bering Sea. Later, a group called the Donut Hole Agreement was made in 1995. This helped resolve disputes about fishing in that area. Pollution can also cause big problems for people. In the 1960s, Lake Erie became very polluted. This caused many fish to die in the Great Lakes.

Even though water can cause fights, there is hope. Many countries choose to work together instead of fighting. Scientists have studied about 300 shared water basins. They found that most of these basins have a positive record. There are hundreds of treaties to help nations share water. A treaty is a formal agreement between countries. These agreements help make sure water use is fair. Good technology and strong rules can also help. These tools make it easier for everyone to share.
