A flood is an overflow of water that covers land that is usually dry.

This can happen in many different ways. Floods are a big concern for farming, building, and keeping people healthy. Sometimes, humans change the land in ways that make floods happen more often. For example, cutting down forests or removing wetlands can change how water moves. Climate change also plays a part by making the water cycle more intense. This can lead to more frequent and stronger flooding events around the world.

There are many different ways a flood can work. River flooding happens when a river's flow exceeds its channel capacity. This often occurs at bends or meanders in the waterway.

Areal flooding occurs when rainwater or snowmelt accumulates on saturated ground. Saturated means the soil is already full of water and cannot soak up more. This often happens in flat areas called floodplains. Coastal flooding happens when storm surges push ocean water onto the land. A storm surge is an extra rise in water caused by a storm.

People have studied these water movements for a long time. Scientists who study water are called hydrologists. They use hydraulic engineering to understand and manage how water moves.

History shows that people have even used flooding on purpose. This is called controlled inundation. In the past, the Dutch used water lines for military defense. These were planned floods to stop enemies from moving.

Other times, flooding was uncontrolled, like during the second Siege of Leiden. These historical events show how much water can change a landscape.

Floods can be very specific to where they happen. In the Red River Valley of the North, you can find overland flooding. This area is very flat and was once a huge glacial lakebed called Lake Agassiz.

In this valley, the river drops only about five inches per mile. This makes the water move slowly across the land for miles. In other places, like the southwest United States, you find arroyos. These are normally-dry channels where flash floods can arrive very suddenly.

Flooding connects to many parts of our daily lives. Many people live near coastlines or on flat floodplains. This is because river land is often fertile and good for farming. Rivers also provide easy paths for travel and business. However, living near water brings risks like property damage. Floods can also spread waterborne diseases or diseases from mosquitoes.
