Aggradation

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Aggradation is a way land grows higher. This happens in river systems. It occurs when sediment builds up. Sediment is material like sand or dirt. The land rises because of this buildup. This process is also called alluviation.

It is a very important part of geology. It changes how the Earth looks over time.

This happens through a simple balance. A river carries sediment along its path. Aggradation occurs when too much sediment arrives. The supply must be greater than the transport. This means the river cannot move it all. The extra material stays in the riverbed. This causes the bed to rise higher.

This can even bury old river channels.

Many things can cause this buildup. Volcanic eruptions can bring more sediment. Earthquakes and faulting also play a part. Changes in climate can change the flow. For example, a drier climate helps. Fewer plants grow in dry weather. Plants help bind the soil together. Without them, more soil moves into rivers.

This can choke the river with sediment.

Scientists study these changes very closely. In 2009, researchers shared a report. They worked at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Their study appeared in the journal Nature Geoscience. They looked at river deltas. They found that less aggradation is a problem. It can increase the risk of flooding.

This is a major concern for deltas.

Aggradation happens in specific places. You can find it in river deltas. It also happens in alluvial fans. These are areas where rivers spread out. These spots often undergo slow subsidence. Subsidence means the land sinks slowly. This sinking can balance the rising land. After millions of years, these areas change. They become large sedimentary basins.

These basins hold ancient floodplains.
