Aggradation

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Rivers carry dirt and sand. This is called sediment. Sometimes, too much sediment stays in the river. This is called aggradation.

Aggradation

Aggradation happens when more sediment arrives than the river can move. This makes the river bed rise up. It can even bury things on the land. It can cover a house.

Many things cause this. A volcano can erupt. This makes rivers carry more dirt. Dry weather can also cause it. When it is dry, plants do not grow well. Plants help hold soil in place. Without them, more dirt moves into the water. At the same time, the river flow may slow down. This can choke the river with sediment.

Aggradation happens in places like river deltas. A delta is where a river meets the sea. These areas can also sink slowly. This sinking can balance the rising land. Over millions of years, these places become sedimentary basins. These are large areas filled with old sediment.

In 2009, experts studied this. They found that less aggradation can lead to more floods. This is a risk for many river deltas.
