Bedrock river

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most rivers flow over loose sand or dirt. But some rivers flow over hard rock. These are called bedrock rivers. They are often found in high mountains.

These rivers change the rock in many ways. One way is through stream power. As water flows down a steep slope, it gains energy. This energy hits the rock and wears it down. This is called incision.

Another way is called abrasion. This happens when the water carries small bits of sand or silt. These bits rub against the rock. This can make deep holes or troughs.

Sometimes, the river moves big chunks of rock. This is called quarrying, or plucking. A crack might form in the rock first. Then, the water forces the piece out. The river then pushes the heavy block along the bed.

Small grains can also cause wedging. These grains get stuck in tiny cracks. As more grains enter, the cracks grow wider. Finally, large blocks can break off. In some rocks, the water can even dissolve the stone. This is called dissolution. It is a slow way to change the river.
