It is made of loess. Loess is a type of fine, silt-like dust.

How did it form? Long ago, strong winds blew dust from the Gobi Desert. This dust landed on the plateau. Over time, the dry climate packed the dust down. This made very thick layers of loess.

The wind does more than just build up the land. It also shapes it. Strong winds cause erosion, which is when wind wears away the ground. This makes features like wind escarpments. An escarpment is a steep slope or cliff.

You can also find vertical loess joints. These are deep cracks in the soil. They happen because of the way the loess is built. Rainwater can soak into these cracks. This can lead to gullies. A gully is a deep channel worn into the land by water. About 108 million people live in this region today. They use the land for farming and building.
